Come join Tyler Audubon Society for the Great Texas Birding Classic (GTBC) on May 3rd! Our team—the Tyler Audubon Pine Warblers—will be conducting a “Big Sit” at the beautiful Neches River National Wildlife Refuge, a major corridor of the Central Flyway. Participating in a big sit involves bringing along a folding chair to sit with the team and let the birds come to us for counting. We will have groups sitting in two or three locations within our designated 50-yard count area centered around our future bird blind location. This annual competitive event is put on by Texas Parks & Wildlife in order to gather data on bird populations and to foster camaraderie among the birding community.
The Tyler Audubon Chapter is sponsoring the Pine Warblers, so there is no fee to join, and the first 20 members to sign up will receive a 2025 GTBC t-shirt to wear as a badge of honor. The event will begin at daybreak and is structured as a come and go event, so participate at your convenience. Even if you don’t sign up in advance, you are still welcome to come on down and join in the fun. TAS will supply coffee, donuts, water, and drinks.
Everyone is invited, whether a member or not, and regardless of skill level. What a great way to learn about the birds in our area!
This event will also be our end-of-year potluck get-together! You do not have to participate in the Big Sit or be a Tyler Audubon member to join the potluck party. Just bring along some tasty finger-type vittles to share with your fellow revelers. The food tables will open up around 12:30 PM, give or take.
